Sweet Einkorn CornbreadThere is a classic debate over adding sugar to cornbread. Around here, we like both, but for different pairings! This recipe for sweet cornbread can be made with einkorn flour or any modern wheat - and does include some sugar! We like to pair this recipe with a big pot of cowboy beans, but it's great on its own too! Harvest & Store Sweet PotatoesDid you plant sweet potatoes this year? If so, then it's likely just about time to check them! Depending on your zone, you will at least be getting close. This post includes all the information you need to successfully harvest, dry, and store your precious produce! Classic Oatmeal Raisin CookiesI originally shared this recipe in 2019, but updated it recently with new photos and streamlined instructions. I won't lie, these cookies might be the most requested dessert around here! With just the right amount of chewiness and a soft center, they are the best oatmeal raisin cookies you'll ever have! Easy No-Sew Fabric PumpkinsIf you're looking for a fun and easy way to decorate your home (or office) for fall, without a lot of effort, these no-sew fabric pumpkins are just the thing! Use whatever extra fabric, socks, or sweaters that you have on hand, and you'll have a set of adorable pumpkins in no time! "Octobers" Anne of Green Gables QuoteFor more years than I can count, September has been a hard month for me and my family. So I'm always so grateful when October rolls around! I made this printable Anne of Green Gables quote to celebrate its arrival! It's free to download, if you want to celebrate too. Easy Homemade Shepherd's PieThings are finally starting to cool off here (it's only in the 80's now!), so we are enjoying these cozy meals more often. Packed with potatoes, seasoned beef, and sauteed vegetables, this shepherd's pie is one of our favorite fall meals. We like to top it with an einkorn crust, but you can omit the crust completely for a Whole-30 variation! Safely Clean and Store Pecans! We are growing our own pecans now (we got 2 last year, ha!), but I grew up with large pecan trees all around us. I have fond memories of picking them up from the yard and snacking on them during the fall. If you're lucky enough to be surrounded by a pecan tree or two, here's what you need to know to safely harvest and store your pecans for eating. Canning ApplesauceTake advantage of all the fall apple sales, and start canning your own applesauce! It's way easier than you think, comes together quickly, and has a depth of flavor that commercial applesauce just doesn't have! Homemade Caramel SauceI'll admit, I love enjoying caramel in the fall, and this recipe makes that easier than ever! With only 4 simple ingredients, you can have fresh, thick, and smooth caramel sauce in just 10 minutes... dangerous, I know! Canning Sweet PotatoesBetween now and the Thanksgiving holiday (at least in the USA), you should be able to snag sweet potatoes at a great discount! Grab them in bulk and can them for later. Or, if you're like us, and you grow your own sweet potatoes, but don't have a root cellar, then canning is a great alternative! This recipe is canned in a very light syrup, though you can also process sweet potatoes in water. Just note that they will lose a lot of flavor if a bit of sweetness isn't added to the water! Cranberry Pecan Chocolate Chip CookiesFull Disclosure: Be careful about making this recipe, because your husband might decide it's the only way he is willing to eat chocolate chip cookies in the fall! In all seriousness, though, these cookies are a wonderful combination of fall flavors that everyone can enjoy! Thanks for Reading! Hopefully you enjoyed this edition of the A Modern Homestead newsletter and found something useful in your pursuit of living more traditionally! We will be back with another newsletter soon, so stay tuned! ~ Jason and Victoria |
